How to layer for a German winter
Grey skies, wind and warm, overheated trains. Layering is the answer: three simple layers that work from the Christmas market to the office.

A German winter is rarely extreme, but it is long, damp and windy, and you are constantly going from cold streets into warm U-Bahns and shops. The trick is layers you can take off.
Layer 1: soft and breathable
A T-shirt or long-sleeve in cotton. Nothing too tight.
Layer 2: the warm one
This is where a heavyweight hoodie or a fleece does the work. Brushed fabric traps warm air, and a zip version is easy to open on the train.
Layer 3: wind and rain
A quilted jacket with a high collar. It blocks the wind, which is what really makes Northern Europe feel cold.
Quick tips
- Choose a hood that fits under a jacket without bunching
- Navy, black and stone go with everything
- On really cold days, a matching fleece set is the cosiest option at home and outside
